I love to watch science fiction movies, because there is so much symbolism in these stories!
Wonder Woman came out a while back, and with great reviews! The 93% Rotten tomatoes rating matched the 93% general audience reviews. This is terrific, especially for a DC comic made into a movie. (No offense, DC, but Marvel is hard to top).
As I revisit the story, I can see so many spiritual parallels. You’ve read this far, keep reading and let’s take a look! (Yes, I realize that the story is taken from Greek mythology, but please allow me to share the symbolism I see that pertains to our days). It is a story of modern day warriors; daughters of the Most high God!
In the beginning of the movie, Wonder Woman’s mother tells her that she was formed from clay. We are all treasures of clay. We were made from the clay of the earth!
Her first name is Diana, which means “godly, divine, glorious.” Her surname is Prince, which means of the royal family. Like Clark Kent, she also has a secret identity. We too, are from a royal family. We too have another “secret” identity—we are daughters of the Most High God.
Diana is a warrior and wears her armor, and so we wear the armor of God. She uses a lasso of truth. We wear a belt of truth. She is wearing a tiara—we wear a helmet of salvation. She wears boots; we wear boots of peace.
The most important pieces of her armor are her shield and her sword which she has on her at all times, while wearing a formal gown or in clothes dressed as a secretary. She is comfortable dressed in her armor.
You see, Wonder Woman has been trained for many years. She knows how to wield her sword. She knows how to use her shield.
She was given certain powers from her gods; we, too, are given power from our God, through the Holy Spirit. In the film, Hippolita, Wonder Woman’s mother, tells her that, “The gods gave us many gifts. One day you will know them all.” These gifts are the gifts of the Spirit which are given to us freely.
When Diana crosses her arms together, they emit a powerful force of light that makes people fly backwards! I looked up bracelet and here is what I found. A bracelet means “in a position of honor and dignity, graceful works or deeds, and embracing the promises of God”. Your arm is your strength. We are doing the works of Jesus, embracing the promises of God.
She is a warrior but her heart for hurting people is what causes her boldness in battle. When she hears about people under bondage, she immediately runs to the battle! Reminds me of the Deborah spirit.
Diana is strong, powerful, and yet she is compassionate and kind. Yet with all that she has two other amazing qualities.
Diana is a picture of the modern day housewife, mother, grandmother, single mother, etc.; she is a picture of the modern day Deborah’s who have been sent here for such a time as this! So, readjust your helmets, ladies, and tighten your belts. Restrap your boots of peace. And take up your breastplate of righteousness, your shield of faith, and your sword of the Spirit! Clad yourself once again in the armor of God, and go into the world and do the works of Jesus! You go, wonder women, and deliver the world from evil. And your God will be with you, as you display His mighty signs, wonders and miracles!
